Lois McMaster Bujold has long been my favorite author, but today she became one of my favorite people. I sent an email to her last night just before midnight – truly at the eleventh hour – to ask if I could include an excerpt from her novel, Memory in my newest book, Feeling Human.
Since the release date for Feeling Human is April 12th, time was of the essence. Not only did Lois give permission, she replied to me this morning. I’m so excited, and I really appreciate her response as well as the privilege! I’d always heard she enjoyed communicating with fans and other writers, but I’m astounded by her down-to-earth graciousness.
If you haven’t read her work, you are missing out. Her plots are complex, ideas creative and thought-provoking, and her characters absolutely live. She has three series to choose from, so check them out to see which one fits your reading pleasure.

Thanks! I already started working on Miss Liv again. I’m using Camp NaNoWriMo to motivate me to put in the hours to catch up on that edit so I can still meet the promised October release. She’ll be back soon. And Feeling Human is out in 10 days…yikes! Fun!

Bujold is a perennial favourite. The vorkosiverse is so re-readable (and whilst the news at the end of Cryoburn is sad, the use of drabbles to capture the mood of other characters is absolutely inspired).
However, one of my favourite books of all time has to be Curse of Chalion – the writing there verges on perfection.

I absolutely agree on Curse of Chalion. I recommended it to several people when it first came out, but most of them didn’t make it through. They thought it was just too strange. I thought it was amazing. To each their own. The writing brilliance is undeniable, however.
Have you read the Sharing Knife series? Different on many levels, but I absolutely love the creatures and cultures she creates. Fantasy at its best.

Can definitely relate to the overwhelming To Read pile! I think her ‘Malice’ creatures are one of the best villains in any genre. Very intriguing concepts throughout the workings of the world in Sharing Knife. Here’s a short clip from wiki about the Malice to perhaps entice adding it to the pile of good reads for those who are interested: “A malice feeds on ‘life force’ or, in the novel’s terms, ‘ground’—which includes not only the internal order of living beings, but also the structural integrity of all matter, the emergent properties of form and function. It is able to mold man-like agents out of wild animals, called “mud-men”, and to absorb the knowledge and skills of humans that it kills.” Of course Ms. Bujold’s descriptions and the way these creatures come to life in the works are much more masterful that this brief overview can capture. I was giddy when she replied. I’m not one to be star struck. I never wallpapered my room with Tiger Beat or band posters, but I admire the hell out of Lois McMaster Bujold. Her writing inspires me, makes me laugh till I cry, makes me think even deeper than I already do, and best of all sweeps me away in story. How does she do that time after time?
